US President George W. Bush takes a look out to sea from the departure portal, or 'Door of No Return', of The Slave House, built in 1776 on Gorée Island, two miles from the Senegalese capital of Dakar. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, Gorée was a slave-trade depot between the 16th and 19th centuries and the last glimpse of home for many of 20 million enslaved Africans. President Bush scoffed at Senegal President Abdoulaye Wadeas's suggestion that the United States might wish to make use of Gorée for the African leg of the US president's "Hello, Mister" World Tour. "You must be out of your fucking head. Why should we need Gorée now that we have Guantanamo Bay?" asked an incredulous Bush.
