Applebaum's description of the National Enquirer as "... the trashiest of American tabloids" struck me as simplistic. This is the scandal rag that revealed John Edwards's marital infidelity. Initially, it was rubbished for doing so. Ultimately, it was proved correct. Is a newspaper "trash" because it vets the lives of politicians? I think not. Terrible mistakes can be made if such a vetting process is foresaken.One such mistake was in evidence last week. I could not quite comprehend Rudy Giuliani's speech at the RNC without resorting to supplementary reading materials in order to gain an intellectual grasp of its content.
Do these inconsequential slanders, rumours, and shadowy backers constitute the substance behind the Walmart politics of Hillary's sub-standard political successor? Has the U.S. become Trailer Nation? Is this what is to be visited on the world in January?
If Palin can woo and win voters along the Ohio valley and north of Pittsburgh — exactly where Hillary Clinton did well — she may help McCain pull out a win on November 4. But someone in the McCain camp has to come up with an economic plan. 2008 is a hard year for the Republicans to recover from the second most unpopular president in living memory. Soap operas won’t do the trick.
